Our otolaryngology department is in close collaboration with the pediatric department of our institute, sharing medical and surgical protocols in order to offer an individual treatment for each child. Moreover, this team has been consolidated as a referral department for pediatricians all around Catalonia.
Sleep Related Respiratory Disorders Unit (Apnoea and Ronchopathy).
In our centre, the diagnosis and treatment is performed together with an interdisciplinary evaluation that includes, besides our department, the sleep specialists at Estivill Clinic. Ronchopathy affects 10% of the child population, while the obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) incidence is about 3%. The clinical features are cardiovascular alterations, behaviour alterations (lack of attention, hyperactivity, aggressiveness, irritability), neurocognitive alterations (memory, global intelligence and distortion of language acquisition...).
The most frequent cause of airway obstruction is adenotonsillar hypertrophy (an inherent factor and very common in the child anatomy).
The treatment of choice in children is surgery, that is directed to solve the obstructive cause. This surgery is easily and safely performed due to new technologies: CO2 Laser surgery, Radiofrequency... It is approximately a half an hour length surgery, that consists in the partial reduction of the tonsils and excision of the adenoid. Using the most advanced methods, pain and intra and post-surgical complications are minimized.
